A baby spends between 14 and 17 hours a day sleeping. The room where that happens isn’t just a room — it’s the environment where their respiratory, immune and nervous systems develop. What’s in that space — the furniture, the paint, the mattress, the textiles — matters more than most brands want you to know.

Furniture: the biggest source of toxins nobody talks about

Most children’s furniture on the market is made with particleboard or MDF panels bonded with urea-formaldehyde resins. Those resins release formaldehyde — a gas classified as a carcinogen by the WHO — for months or years after purchase. The process intensifies with heat and humidity, exactly the conditions of a closed bedroom.

The "new furniture smell" we all recognize is precisely that off-gassing process. In adults, in ventilated spaces, the effects are minor. In a baby’s room, where they sleep 15 hours a day just centimeters from that surface, the exposure is prolonged and constant.

What to look for: certified solid wood (pine, ash, beech, oak) with no particleboard and no synthetic glues. If the piece does use MDF or particleboard, insist on E0 or E1 class with certification from an external lab, not just a manufacturer’s claim.

What to avoid: furniture with no material specification, finishes with polyurethane lacquer or solvent-based paints, and any product that can’t tell you exactly what it’s made of.

Finishes: what you can’t see can still hurt you

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) don’t come only from the panels: industrial varnishes, lacquers and paints are another major source. Polyurethane finishes, very common in mid-to-high-priced furniture, emit VOCs during curing and afterward.


What to look for: water-based varnishes, natural oils (linseed, tung, beeswax), water-based paints with low-emission certification. In children’s furniture, EN 71-3 certification guarantees the finish doesn’t contain heavy metals above safe limits.

What to avoid: polyurethane lacquers, solvent-based paints, varnishes with no stated composition.

The crib or bed: the certifications that actually matter

Beyond materials, a crib or bed must pass structural safety tests carried out by accredited external laboratories. It’s not enough for the manufacturer to say it "complies with European regulations" — that can be a self-certification with no independent verification.

The key standards are EN 716 for cribs (bar spacing, structural strength, no dangerous gaps) and EN 747 for bunk beds and elevated beds. Ask for the test report number and the name of the lab that carried it out. If they won’t give it to you, keep looking.

The mattress: the great forgotten piece

Many parents carefully choose the crib and then buy the cheapest mattress that fits. It’s one of the most common mistakes, because the baby sleeps literally on the mattress — face just centimeters from its surface — for years.

Conventional mattresses can contain foams treated with synthetic flame retardants, solvent-based adhesives and fabrics with waterproof finishes that emit perfluorinated compounds. None of those materials belong in a baby’s room.

What to look for: mattresses with a natural latex core (GOLS certified), certified wool (GOTS), or foam free of toxic flame retardants (CertiPUR-EU). The cover should be certified organic cotton.

What to avoid: mattresses with no stated composition, uncertified foams, covers with synthetic waterproofing treatments.

Wall paint: the most underestimated toxin

Conventional paints contain VOCs that are released into the air for weeks or months after application. In a freshly painted room, VOC levels can be several times higher than outdoors.

What to look for: paints labeled "0 VOC" or "low VOC" and certified by bodies such as Blue Angel (Der Blaue Engel) or the EU Ecolabel. If you can, paint the room several weeks in advance and ventilate it thoroughly before your baby sleeps there.

What to avoid: paints with no VOC specification, glossy solvent-based paints, any product that still smells strong days after application.

Textiles: organic cotton or nothing

Sheets, crib liners and bedding are in direct contact with your baby’s skin for hours. Conventional textiles can carry pesticide residue (on non-organic cotton), azo dyes and formaldehyde added as a color stabilizer.

What to look for: organic cotton with GOTS certification, natural linen, untreated wool. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification guarantees the textile contains no harmful substances above safe limits.

What to avoid: uncertified textiles, synthetic microfibers (which shed microplastics), fabrics with uncertified stain-resistant or anti-allergen finishes.

Ventilation: the simplest thing, and the most ignored

No material, however good, replaces ventilation. Indoor air can have toxin concentrations 2 to 5 times higher than outdoors simply from the buildup of what the room’s materials emit.

The solution is simple: air the room out for at least 15 minutes every morning, even in winter. Create a cross breeze when you can. And if the room has just been painted or has new furniture, ventilate especially intensively during the first few weeks.
