When you're looking for a crib or bed for your child, the first question that comes to mind isn't the color or the price. It's something more visceral: is this safe?
And you're right to ask. The children's furniture market is full of products that look solid in photos, cost little, and come in a box with assembly instructions in five languages. But between that box and your child's real safety lies a gap that only certifications can close. The problem is that almost no one explains what they mean, which ones are mandatory, and which are just marketing.
Here's what you should know before you buy.
The most common mistake: confusing "has a certificate" with "is certified"
Any manufacturer can print a logo on a box. What makes the difference is whether that logo corresponds to an actual test carried out by an accredited laboratory, with a verifiable file number.
When we talk about certification for children's furniture, we mean European technical standards — the so-called EN standards — which set out exactly what tests a product must pass: the strength of the slats, the gap between them, the stability of the structure, the absence of toxic substances in the finishes, the behavior of the locking mechanisms...
These aren't recommendations. They're the minimum standard that separates furniture fit for a baby from furniture that isn't.

The standards that matter: what to look for and why
EN 716 — The standard for cribs
The UNE-EN 716 standard (in its updated 2018 version) is the European reference for cribs and folding cribs for domestic use. It has two parts: the first sets out the safety requirements, the second the test methods.
What exactly does it check? Mainly three things:
The gap between the slats. It must be between 4.5 and 6.5 cm. Below that range, a baby's body can get trapped. Above it, the head can pass through and cause strangulation. It's a narrow margin, and it isn't negotiable.
Structural strength. The crib is subjected to static and dynamic loads that simulate real use — and rough use — by a baby. If parts give way, screws loosen, or joints separate, the product fails.
The absence of dangerous gaps. Any opening a child's head could fit into (roughly between 4.5 and 23 cm) is a risk. The standard maps out every one of those points.
A piece of furniture that meets EN 716 states this explicitly in its technical documentation. If you can't find it on the product page or by asking the manufacturer, that silence is already an answer.
EN 747 — The standard for bunk beds and elevated beds
When it's time to move up to a bunk bed or a loft bed, the EN 747 standard comes into play. This standard covers elevated beds — where the mattress sits above the floor — and sets specific requirements for stability, the height of the safety guardrails, and the structure's resistance to dynamic loads.
Something many parents don't know: the regulation recommends that no child under 6 sleep on the top level of a bunk bed. Not because the bed isn't safe, but because at that age children haven't yet developed the reflexes they need if they wake up in the dark, up high.
EN 71-3 — Finishes: what you can't see can hurt you
A crib can pass structural tests with flying colors and still have a serious problem: the paint.
The EN 71-3 standard regulates the migration of chemical elements in materials meant to come into contact with children. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, or mercury have strict limits on their presence in finishes. This standard was created for toys, but its application has extended to children's furniture precisely because babies suck, bite, and lick everything within reach — including the slats of their crib.
If the manufacturer uses water-based paints with eco-certification and low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, even better. But at the very least, compliance with EN 71-3 should be non-negotiable.
REACH and formaldehyde — The invisible poison in particleboard
Here's one of the least known and most important topics: the European Union's REACH Regulation.
REACH requires manufacturers to identify and manage the risks of chemical substances present in their products. When it comes to furniture, the main suspect is formaldehyde, a gas naturally emitted by particleboard, MDF, and plywood when they're made with urea-formaldehyde resin glues.
The problem? That gas is released slowly into the air over years. In adults, in ventilated spaces, its effects are minor. In a closed nursery, with a baby spending 12 hours a day sleeping just inches from a board emitting formaldehyde... the equation changes.
The new European regulation (EU Regulation 2023/1464, fully applicable from August 2026) sets maximum formaldehyde emission limits for indoor items, including furniture. Furniture made from natural solid wood, without synthetic glues or binders, doesn't have this problem. Furniture made from particleboard or MDF must prove its emissions are below the permitted threshold.
The "meets European regulations" trap
Many brands use this phrase as if it were a certificate in itself. It isn't.
"Meets European regulations" can mean that the manufacturer itself has issued a declaration of conformity without any outside laboratory verifying anything. It's legal — it's called self-certification — and it's completely insufficient when we're talking about a baby's safety.
What you should demand is that compliance be backed by a test carried out by a notified body or an independent accredited laboratory. Names like AENOR, TÜV, Bureau Veritas, or LGAI (Applus+) are common references in Spain for this kind of verification.
If the manufacturer can't give you that document, keep looking.
Another form of certification is knowing where the furniture was made. This gives you very valuable information about the standards, regulations, and steps it went through. A piece of furniture made in a workshop in Spain, under Spanish and European regulations at every stage of the process, is verifiable in a way that a factory on the other side of the world simply isn't.
Solid wood: the most honest certification of all
Beyond tests and seals, there's a way to simplify the equation a great deal: choosing solid wood of known origin.
A piece of furniture made from solid pine or ash, without particleboard or resin glues, eliminates the formaldehyde problem at the root. Its water-based paint and natural varnish finishes keep volatile compound levels to a minimum. And its solid structure easily passes the EN 716 or EN 747 strength tests, because it doesn't depend on the integrity of a pressed-sawdust core.
This doesn't mean every piece of solid wood furniture is automatically safe. Testing is still necessary. But when the starting point is a noble material without shortcuts, the path to certification is much shorter, and the margin for error, much smaller.

Quick checklist before you buy
Before confirming any crib or bed purchase, ask yourself these questions:
- Does the manufacturer explicitly mention EN 716 (cribs) or EN 747 (bunk beds/elevated beds)?
- Is there a test carried out by an accredited outside laboratory to back it up?
- Are the finishes free of heavy metals and compliant with EN 71-3?
- Can the manufacturer prove compliance with the REACH Regulation regarding formaldehyde?
- Is the furniture made from solid wood or particleboard/MDF?
- Do you know what will happen to that piece of furniture once your child outgrows it?
- Where is the furniture made?
If the answer to any of these questions is "I don't know" or "they didn't tell me," you already know what to do: keep asking. Or find a manufacturer who answers all of them without you having to ask.
