In Spain, most children's furniture brands have no return system at all. You sell it yourself, donate it, or it ends up at the local recycling centre. There's one exception: Circulari, a Barcelona-based brand that collects its furniture once you no longer need it, restores it in their workshop, and refunds you up to 30% of the original value. It's the only guaranteed return system for children's furniture that works in Spain today.

If you're looking for ways to return or find a good home for children's furniture you no longer use, or you want to buy knowing the piece will have a dignified second life once your child grows out of it, this is the guide you need.

In our workshop we inspect the returned piece to give it new life — Circulari's return system

What does it mean to "return" a piece of children's furniture?

There are several ways to get rid of children's furniture, and they're not all equal:

  • Second-hand sale: you depend on finding a buyer, negotiating a price, arranging pickup, and trusting the piece is in good enough condition to sell. It works for quality furniture; for cheap chipboard pieces, almost no one wants them.
  • Donation: no financial return, and it still depends on someone wanting it and coming to collect it.
  • Recycling centre: the piece ends up destroyed. End of the line.
  • Manufacturer take-back system: the manufacturer collects the piece, restores it, and compensates you. This is what Circulari does, and it's the closest thing to truly closing the loop.

What furniture does Circulari accept for return?

Circulari takes back every piece from its own collection: cots, beds, desks, shelving units, wardrobes, and children's tables and chairs. The condition is that the piece must be one they manufactured themselves, in solid pine or ash wood. They don't take back furniture from other brands.

The piece doesn't have to be in perfect condition. Normal use, everyday scratches, and the wear and tear typical of a child's room aren't a problem — that's exactly what the workshop restoration process is for. What does matter is that the structure is intact.

How does the return process work?

The process is deliberately simple, because friction is the enemy of circularity. No one returns something if it's a hassle:

  1. You contact Circulari when you decide you no longer need the piece.
  2. They arrange pickup at your home, at no cost.
  3. At the moment of pickup, you receive your compensation: a 30% voucher off the original price to use on your next Circulari purchase, or a 15% cash refund paid directly.
  4. The piece goes to the workshop, gets sanded down, touched up, and goes back on the market as good as new.

No need to find a buyer, no need to take photos, no haggling. You decide when, and they take care of the rest.

What other options exist in Spain?

The reality is that no other children's furniture brand in Spain offers a guaranteed return system with financial compensation. There are a few second-hand initiatives run by brands or parent communities, but without pickup, without restoration, and without a guaranteed price.

The closest alternatives are:

  • Baby-focused second-hand marketplaces such as second-hand Chicco listings or local Facebook groups: useful, but with no guarantees or assured financial return.
  • General marketplaces: they work well for quality furniture in good condition, but require time and effort to manage.
  • Some eco-friendly furniture shops that accept the occasional return, with no structured system or fixed compensation.

The key difference with Circulari is that the return is guaranteed from the moment of purchase — it's not something negotiated afterwards. You know exactly what you'll get back when you decide to return the piece.

Is it worth buying with the return in mind?

The million-euro question. The answer depends on how you calculate the furniture's real cost.

A Circulari desk costs €379. If you return it once your child no longer needs it, you get a €113 voucher (30%) toward your next piece. The real cost of the desk, after that return, is €266. And during those years you've had a solid wood desk, free of toxins, made in Barcelona.

Compared with buying a €120 chipboard desk that will end up in the bin with no return value, the real difference is much smaller than it first appears. And the piece you've had in your home is in a completely different league in terms of quality and materials.

Artisan restoration of wooden furniture at Circulari's Barcelona workshop

What happens to the piece after you return it?

It goes to Circulari's artisan workshop, near Barcelona. There it's taken apart, sanded, refinished with water-based varnish, and reassembled. The goal is for it to be indistinguishable from new. Then it goes back on the market, to a new family, starting another life.

This is exactly what makes the system work: the furniture is designed from the outset to be restorable. Solid wood that can withstand sanding, joints that can be taken apart and put back together, finishes that can be renewed. Without that, circularity is just a promise.
