The question everyone types into Google is “desk height for a child of X years old”. And the honest answer is: age isn't enough. Two 7-year-olds can measure 116 or 131 cm. What sets the right height is stature.

Here is the reference chart from the European standard for educational furniture EN 1729, the same one used for school furniture.

Height chart (EN 1729)

Child's stature Seat height Table height Approximate age
93–116 cm 26 cm 46 cm 3–5 years
108–121 cm 31 cm 53 cm 4–6 years
119–142 cm 35 cm 59 cm 6–8 years
133–159 cm 38 cm 64 cm 8–11 years
146–176 cm 43 cm 71 cm 11–14 years
159–188 cm 46 cm 76 cm 14+ years

How to check the height is right

You don't need a tape measure for the final check. Sit your child down and look at three things:

  1. Feet flat on the floor, knees at ~90°. If they dangle, use a footrest.
  2. Elbows at tabletop height with a straight back and relaxed shoulders.
  3. Back supported by the backrest, with the hips right at the back of the seat.

What if they're between two sizes?

Choose the smaller size and add a footrest. It's better than it being too high and your child ending up hunched or “on tiptoes”.

The problem of growing (and how we solve it)

A child changes size every two or three years. That leaves two paths: buy cheap furniture and throw it away, or buy well and change size without throwing anything away. At Circulari, when your child outgrows a piece of furniture you can return it and recover up to 30% of its value to move up to the next size. How the return works.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a 7-year-old's desk be?
It depends on their stature. For 119–142 cm (typical at that age), the EN 1729 standard puts the table at ~59 cm and the seat at ~35 cm.

How do I know if the chair and table are at the right height?
The child should rest their feet on the floor with knees at 90° and elbows at tabletop height, with their back supported by the backrest.

Is it better to go by age or by stature?
By stature. Age is only a guide, because at the same age there are big differences in height.
