When we set up a study corner, almost all of us think of the table first and leave the chair for last: “any one will do”. It's exactly the other way round. The chair is what decides the posture, and posture is what your child will repeat for thousands of hours throughout their schooling.

Here we tell you what to really look for, without falling into the two most common traps.

The two chairs you should NOT use

  • The dining chair. It's designed for the height of an adult table, so it leaves the child too high relative to their desk: shrugged shoulders and bent wrists.
  • The adult office chair (even if it's “junior”). Its geometry, seat depth and backrest are calculated for an adult body. It's too big for a child and doesn't support their back properly.

The posture you're looking for

A good study posture in a child is easy to recognise:

  • Feet resting on the floor (or a footrest), knees at ~90°.
  • Hips at the back of the seat, with the back supported by the backrest.
  • Elbows at tabletop height, shoulders relaxed.
  • Gaze slightly downward onto the paper, without pushing the neck forward.

If the chair forces them to “dangle” their feet or lean towards the table, it's not the right chair — or not the right height. Check the size in the height chart.

What to look for in the chair

  1. A backrest that follows the back. A wraparound backrest helps the child keep their lower back supported without thinking about it.
  2. A stable seat. Stability above “wheels and swivel”: for studying, firmness wins.
  3. Height matched to the table. This is the key point, and it's tied to stature.
  4. Healthy, solid materials. Solid wood and toxin-free finishes, just like the desk. Safety certifications.

Adjustable or fixed?

An adjustable chair can seem like the answer, but many sacrifice stability and materials to get the mechanism. Our approach is different: a solid, well-proportioned chair, and a circular system to change size when the child grows, without throwing anything away and recovering part of the value.

Our proposal: the Alune wraparound chair

The Alune Chair (€119) has a wraparound backrest that encourages an upright posture and the stability needed for everyday use. It's designed to coordinate in height and style with the Orian desk, so the set meets the right geometry from day one.

When your child outgrows it, you can return it and recover up to 30% (real cost ≈ €83). How the return works.

A chair designed for their back, not a miniature office chair.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child use an office chair for studying?
It's not ideal: its geometry is designed for adults and leaves the child without proper back and foot support. Better a chair proportioned to their size with a backrest that follows the back.

What height should a child's study chair be?
The one that lets them rest their feet on the floor with knees at 90° and elbows at table height. It depends on stature; check the EN 1729 chart.

Is an adjustable chair better for children?
It can extend use, but often at the cost of stability and materials. A solid, well-sized chair, combined with a system for changing size, is usually the better option.
