“Wooden desk” is one of those labels that sounds good and says little. That phrase covers everything from a particleboard piece with a printed sheet imitating wood grain to a solid wood desk that will last until your child leaves home. The price difference is real, but the difference in durability and health is even bigger.

Here's what to check before you buy.

1. Solid wood, plywood or particleboard

  • Solid wood: boards of real wood. It can be sanded and restored, stands up to knocks and humidity far better and releases no formaldehyde. It's the most durable.
  • Plywood: glued layers of wood; good strength, mid-range quality.
  • Veneered particleboard/MDF: pressed particles with resins, covered in melamine or a decorative sheet. Cheaper, but it swells with humidity and can't be restored.

Quick trick: look at the edge and the screws. If the edge reveals an interior of “pressed sawdust”, it's particleboard. Solid wood vs. MDF: what nobody tells you.

2. The finish (you breathe this)

A desk is a surface where the child rests their hands and breathes up close for hours. Conventional varnishes and lacquers can emit VOCs — literally, the “new furniture smell”. Look for water-based finishes or natural oils, with no solvents. What does your child breathe? VOCs and finishes.

3. The wood: where does it come from?

A solid wood kids' desk should be able to tell you the origin of its wood and whether it's certified (FSC/PEFC). It's not marketing: it's the difference between responsible logging and the other kind. What FSC and PEFC mean.

4. Stability and edges

Check that it doesn't wobble when leaned on and that the edges are rounded. A kids' desk isn't subject to the same regulations as a crib, but the safety logic is the same. Safety certifications in children's furniture.

5. Make it theirs, not just another piece of furniture

The desks children really use are the ones that feel like their own: with shelves at their height and somewhere to hang and display what they make. It's the difference between “doing homework” and wanting to sit there.

Our proposal: the Orian Desk

The Orian Desk (€379) is solid wood with toxin-free finishes, a spacious table, two built-in shelves and a vertical cork panel for them to display their creations. It's designed to last for years and, when your child outgrows it, you can return it and recover up to 30% — a real cost of about €265. How the return works. And to get the size right, see the height chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a desk is solid wood or particleboard?
Look at the edge and the screw holes: if you see an interior of pressed particles, it's particleboard or veneered MDF. Solid wood shows real, continuous grain on the edge.

Is it worth paying more for solid wood in a kids' desk?
Yes if you're after durability and health: solid wood can be restored, emits no formaldehyde and stands up to intensive use. With a return system, you also recover part of the investment when you change it.

Which finish is safest for a children's desk?
Water-based finishes or natural oils with no solvents, which don't emit VOCs. Avoid furniture with a strong “new” smell.
